Shadowing Assignments
The Shadowing Program is a six-week paid internship program designed to give high school seniors a realistic look into a career in healthcare. This program provides invaluable insight into healthcare practices, medical research experience and day-to-day operations in hospitals and other health care environments. The Shadowing Program also exposes students to a variety of professional networking chains at both the local and national levels and is an opportunity to become part of a rising network of young leaders and scholars in the fields of science and medicine.
Students are partnered with various distinguished local professionals who will mentor the students for the entirety of the six weeks. Students build internship and learning goals, prepared periodic evaluations of both themselves and their mentors, and develop management skills through the production of weekly reports, timecards, and a final Powerpoint presentation.
In 2009 Kiara Johnson chartered several duties in the Shadowing Program including managing healthcare equipment, transporting patients to Labor & Delivery, and organizing patient charts. Miss Johnson attends Mattie T. Blount High School where she maintains a 4.45 GPA and has also participated in the Center of Excellence's S.T.R.I.P.E.S., S.T.A.R.S., and STEP-UP Programs with exemplary results. She is currently interested in pursuing a career in Optometry or Ophthalmology.
Concerning the Shadowing Program, Kiara shares:
"I learned from performing these tasks the importance of the HIPPA law...the importance of teamwork...and the duties that I perform throughout the hospital help me to gain awareness of the reality of working as a health care professional. Performing these duties taught me that I can work in the field of healthcare without being afraid of the consequences or what may go wrong."
