STEP-UP Program

step-up1The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) exposes rising 12th grade students to a number of areas of research through the STEP-UP Program, the Short-Term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons. The STEP-UP Program was developed for underrepresented minority students who are committed to healthcare careers that fall within the NIDDK mission areas. In the STEP-UP Program, student exposure to research falls in the areas of: diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, liver, urologic, kidney and hematologic diseases. The program is designed to provide eight full consecutive weeks of basic or clinical research during the summer supervised by experienced faculty members that are active in the research missions of the NIDDK.

step-up2 The NIDDK STEP-UP Program provides research education grants to seven institutions that will provide students with research education and training opportunities to develop research capabilities and support their commitment to pursuing a healthcare career. The STEP-UP Program culminates in a presentation conference at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Students then present their research to an audience of peers, mentors and scientific experts. Past research projects completed by students in the STEP-UP Program at the University of South Alabama include:
