RE: Deadlines for theses/dissertations

For those Chairs of theses or dissertations committees expecting students to complete in the Fall Semester, 1999, the deadline for submission of final copies to the Graduate Dean's Office is 5:00
p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 1999.

The Graduate Council has approved the following guidelines:

1 . Defense Completed. Thesis/Dissertation defense must be completed before the manuscript's first submission.

2. ** First Submission Deadline (October 28, 1999). A signature sheet completed by the committee must accompany the manuscript's first submission. No corrections other than those recommended by the Graduate Dean's office may be made after this submission. NO thesis/dissertation will be accepted after this date.

3. Corrections Check. The dean's office will approve corrections before the final copies are made.

4. Deadline for Final Submission of Manuscripts (published in the Bulletin). Paperwork for UMI microfilming and receipt from the Bursar for binding must be submitted at this time. (November 11, 1999).

5. Deadline for thesis/dissertation grades in Registrar's Office (published in the Bulletin). (December 1, 1999).

The First Submission review encompasses only margins, pagination, format, content arrangement and consistency for conformance with standards set forth in the guide for Preparing Theses and Dissertations; Fifth Edition, 1997. Content and quality of the document are left entirely up to the student and the committee. We will point out any other errors we happen to notice, but this review is not an editing or proofreading of the document.

Attached is a checklist containing the most common errors and problems seen in thesis drafts. This checklist is provided to assist students and their advisors. Please distribute widely!
