Perry, Western Civilization provides a history of the West.  Perry M. Rogers, Aspects of Western Civilization, provides many primary source documents -- writings by people who lived "back then."    I WANT YOU TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE DOCUMENTS IN ROGERS.  THE ASSIGNMENTS IN THIS BOOK ARE NO LESS IMPORTANT THAN THOSE IN THE TEXT BOOK (Perry).   I hope these first hand readings will give you a sense of how people thought, and also introduce you to some of the sources from which historians like Perry have derived their knowledge.

A few assignments involve pictures.  They are available on the Web, and also will be shown in class.  They are indicated by “WEB” following the assignment.  They are linked to the assignments on this web page.

A few reading selections are included in Additional Source Readings, handed out the first day of class and available on this web site. They are indicated in the assignments as “Source Readings,” and have links from the reading assignment to the reading.

Quizzes: 30% of grade. I will drop your lowest quiz.
Midterm examination: one hour - 35% of grade,  one hour and fifteen minutes, in class, Wednesday,
February 29th, at normal class time (6:00 - 7:15 pm)
Final Exam: two hours - 35% of grade, May 9th, Wednesday, 6:00 - 8:00 pm, in classroom

RELIEF FROM SEVERAL FINAL EXAMINATIONS PER DAY:
Students are entitled to relief from three or four final examinations on the same day. Please contact me first.  If the student makes a formal written request two or more weeks prior to the first day of final examinations, the student’s final examinations will be rescheduled normally on the following basis: Spring Semester - Second exam may be rescheduled.  The request is made to the dean of the college in which the course is taught, and the rescheduling is done through that office. If more than one college is involved, the appropriate deans will coordinate the rescheduling.

Grading Scale:  90 and above = A,  80-89 = B, 70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, 59 and below = F

The Midterm and Final Exams will be all essay.  You will need to bring in a bluebook ahead of the midterm and one bluebook ahead of the final as well.  They are available in the USA Bookstore at very modest cost.   I will provide study guides for the Midterm and Final.  Much of the material on the class examinations comes from my lectures, so it will be difficult to pass the course without attending classes regularly.  You are responsible for finding out from other students about the contents of lectures you miss, as well as about announcements in class concerning examinations, changes in deadlines, etc.

Makeup midterm or final exams will only be given because of a medically excused absence or other well-documented reason for absence at the regularly scheduled exam time.  THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UPS FOR QUIZZES, SINCE I DROP THE LOWEST GRADE -- IF YOU MISS ONE QUIZ THAT WILL BE YOUR LOWEST GRADE, BUT IF YOU MISS TWO OR MORE QUIZZES YOU WILL HAVE A ZERO (0) AVERAGED IN FOR EACH MISSED QUIZ.

EXTRA CREDIT

Extra Credit for Attendance: Attendance is not required, but I take attendance and I will give you additional credit for your attendance as follows:
0 absences: Three points added to your overall average.
1 absence: Two points added to your overall average.
2 absences: One point added to your overall average.
3 or more absences, no points added.

Please note that you must arrive and leave on time to be considered present.  If you sleep in class or "surf the web" or talk with your neighbor instead of paying attention, you will be marked absent for that day.  If you need to leave early on a given day, please speak to me at the beginning of class.

Please note that, since Attendance credit is Extra Credit, no excuses will be accepted.  If you are not there for whatever reason, you will be marked absent.  However, also please note that no points are taken off of your class average for absences.  Thus it is possible to receive an A even if you are absent more than the maximum allowed (unless you miss more than one quiz).

Extra Credit for Study Skills Seminars:  Study Skills Seminars are available this semester.  You will receive extra credit points for attending them.  The Study Skills Seminar Schedule is now available on the course web page.

I believe that Study Skills Seminars are extremely valuable for you, and that the sooner you attend them the more you will benefit.  Thus I am weighting the extra credit to encourage you to attend early in the semester.   If you attend a session on or before Sunday, February 26th, you will receive four points added to your overall average at the end of the semester.  If you attend a session after the cutoff date of Sunday, February 26th, you will receive two points added to your overall average at the end of the semester. You cannot receive extra credit for attendance at more than one seminar.  The maximum number of points you can receive is four.
