UNDERSTANDING THE CLASS ASSIGNMENTS:
For most classes, there is assigned reading. In most cases there are assignments in both the textbook, Marvin Perry, Western Civilization, A Brief Survey, and in the Perry M. Rogers, Aspects of Western Civilization, Volume I. Here is an example: Mesopotamia: Politics and Society READING: Perry, 7-11, 19-22 (Overview of Near Eastern Religion and Society), Rogers, 3-5 In this example, “Perry” refers to Marvin Perry’s Western Civilization, pages 7-11, and “Rogers” refers to Perry Rogers’ Aspects of Western Civilization, pages 3-5. When you look at the first assigned page in each book, you will find usually find a title in the text that describes the topic. Start reading from there, and read through until the end of the last full reading on the last page of the assignment. Rogers book Aspects of Western Civilization contains original writings by people living at the time we are studying. In the above example, Rogers 3-5 has two writings by ancient Mesopotamians. The first, The Reign of Sargon, gives an anonymous account of a Mesopotamian ruler, Sargon. The second, The Code of Hammurabi, presents a famous Mesopotamian law code. Each writing has a brief introduction by Perry Rogers, the book’s editor. Be sure to read the original text carefully, not just the introduction. Some assignments have a section that says Source Readings, instead of “Perry” or “Rogers.” These assignments may be found in two places: in the handout attached to this syllabus called “Supplemental Source Readings, History 101, Dr. Monheit”, and on the course web page. On the course web page, you will find a link to the reading assignment. Finally, there are a few assignments that consist of pictures, indicated by "WEB." These assignments are only available on the course web page, where you will find a link to them. |
