General Information

Introduction

The Intramural Program provides the opportunity to enhance the college experience outside of the traditional classroom by providing the student staff, faculty, and alumni the chance to participate in the fun and excitement of intramural competition. Intramural sports offer both an outlet for those who would prefer the arena of serious competition and a relaxed atmosphere for those that just want to unwind.

Intramurals sports offer lessons involving character, emotion, competition, humility, and overcoming adversity. All these important life lessons are learned in the intramural classroom. How one chooses to handle jubilation and disappointment, achievement and failure, winning and losing, will be as important to your personal growth and development as anything else you will experience while at the University. The classroom will develop your mind; the lessons learned outside the classroom will develop your character. In the Intramural Program, your total development is our goal, and in helping to achieve this goal, we will provide the fun and excitement. Who said college has to be boring? Get in the game!

  1. USA Intramurals is open to all currently enrolled students, staff, faculty, alumni, and Intramural Hall of Fame inductees.

Alumni Policy

USA Alumni are encouraged to participate in Intramural Sports. Alumni are defined by the Intramural Program as any graduate or previous student of the University of South Alabama who has been issued a Jag number during the course of their enrollment. Although we encourage alumni participation in our program, our intramural philosophy emphasizes student participation and therefore we encourage alumni to incorporate currently enrolled students on their teams. To this end, the Coordinator of Intramural Sports can mandate restrictions and disqualifications of alumni teams during intramural playoffs that do not have a significant student involvement.

The following 2 plans are offered to Alumni participants:

Level 1: Rec Center Alumni Member (have Rec Center Alumni pass)

  • Pay Intramurals $25/semester to participate in all Intramural leagues for the semester
  • Receive full access to The Rec Center and Intramural Sports
  • Access via Rec Center Alumni Pass

Level 2: Non Rec Center Alumni Member

  • Pay $35 fee/ semester
  • Allowed to play in all Intramural leagues for the semester

Forfeit/ Default Policy

Sportsmanship

A part of the philosophy of the Intramural Program is that good sportsmanship is very important to the conduct of every intramural contest. In order to encourage proper conduct during intramural competition, game officials, supervisors and administrative personnel shall make decisions to warn, penalize, or eject players/teams/fans for unsportsmanlike behavior.

Officials have the authority to remove, without warning, any player from an activity who is playing in a dangerous manner or who is demonstrating unsportsmanlike behavior. That player may also receive additional penalties which could include expulsion for the Intramural Program for a year. Anyone suspended from the Intramural Program will not be allowed to participate or spectate in any aspect of the program until the suspension is lifted. These decisions will be final and without game time appeal. The Coordinator of Intramural Activities will rule on any further penalties to be prescribed as a result of:

  • Unsportsmanlike conduct
  • Profanity
  • Unnecessary delay of game
  • Striking, shoving or threatening an opponent
  • Striking, shoving or threatening an official
  • Any action with the intent to injure an opponent
  • Any action deemed unsportsmanlike or that makes a travesty of the game
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct can result in warnings, suspensions, or expulsions.
  • While on suspension, a player cannot participate or spectate in any aspect of the recreation program including Rec. center privileges.
  • Threatening an official will always mandate an automatic suspension for the remainder of the year.
  • Cursing will not be tolerated in our intramural program.
  • Smoking and alcohol is prohibited during intramural events and on intramural grounds.
Protests

  • Inform game officials at the time of protest.
  • Turn in a written protest within 24 hours to the Coordinator of Intramural Activities.
  • Misapplication of rules, not judgment, are grounds for protests.
  • Protests that are upheld will be replayed from the point of interruption, the game will be replayed in its entirety, a win will be awarded, or a loss will be vacated.
Officials

  • Any student interested in officiating will need to attend the mandatory clinics and weekly meetings.
  • Student comments are always welcome in helping to critique officials.
  • We evaluate officials based on their rule knowledge, judgment and attitude.
Program Information

  • Schedules will be posted online with hard copies given out at the managers meetings.
Free Agent Program

  • Individuals wanting to join a team can sign their name to the free-agent sheet at the field house.
  • Teams can check free agent availability on the sign up sheets at the field house.
Varsity Athlete Policy

A limited number of varsity athletes are allowed to participate in intramural sports. Varsity athletes who participated during the current academic year are ineligible to play intramurals in that particular sport. Participation will be defined as:

  • an athlete who is or was on a roster in a varsity sport at a 4 year institution
  • someone who has been on a varsity scholarship within the current academic school year
  • redshirt athletes

*The Intramural Coordinator reserves the right to define varsity athlete status for any player.

While there is no restriction on how many varsity athletes a team may have on their roster, the restriction will apply to how many varsity athletes are participating on the court, field, etc at one time. The following are the restrictions per sport.
