USA has embraced green building practices across the system, including the construction of buildings, which have been designed in compliance with Alabama public building regulations for energy efficiency, and even in its parking lots. This has resulted in the following:
- Internal green standards for new buildings on campus, including the new USA Dining Facility, which opened in early 2011 and is certified as the University’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building.
- The new Shelby Hall Engineering and Computing Sciences Building, slated for completion in 2012, will be LEED certified and have the latest environmental practices in its specialized laboratory building.
- Construction of green parking lots at both the Mitchell Center and the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.
- A commitment to the reduction of hard surface parking to minimize surface runoff of storm water and reduce vehicular traffic.
