Departmental Scholarships

CRITERIA
In addition to its grants to aid the study-abroad experience, the Department has a number of other scholarships, including the Pol Stock, the Dyess, and each of the four separate language awards. While these scholarships and awards may be used to supplement students' travel grants (from Foundation sources), selections are made by the Department (with the exception of the Dyess) first and foremost on the basis of academic merit. In the application of intent to study abroad students should also indicate whether or not they are interested in being considered for any additional awards. Some or all of the following awards may be split in any given year. Criteria for these scholarships are as follows:

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

1-THE PATRICIA LANE DYESS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Foreign language students who are in their sophomore or junior year and who have completed a minimum of one and a half years of university-level language study are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in foreign language courses taken at USA, an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0, and be recommended by an instructor or professor in the Department of Foreign Languages. Preference will be given to Foreign Language majors and minors, as well as students majoring or minoring in academic programs with substantial foreign language components, such as International Studies, teacher certification programs, etc.

Interested students must demonstrate financial need in their application. Confirmation thereof by the Dyess Scholarship Committee will occur before the award is made.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents may apply. The award is a one-time grant to cover tuition and educational expenses at the University of South Alabama, its associated study abroad programs, or at other nationally recognized programs abroad.

Students can apply for the Dyess Scholarship in late Spring of the academic year. Awards are decided at the end of the semester.

2-THE MARGARET POL STOCK AWARD
General preference will be given to an upper-level language student majoring in a Foreign Language (or International Studies) with an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in a second foreign language. If all candidates nominated under this category are of equal merit, preference will be given to the language major.

Second preference will be given to an upper-level language major with an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in the field.

Third preference will be given to an intermediate student majoring in a language with an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in at least one other foreign language.

Fourth preference will be given to an intermediate student majoring in a language with an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in the field.

3-THE ERWIN W.GOESSLING SCHOLARSHIP (GERMAN)
First preference to an upper-level German major; overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0; demonstrated interest in the German language, culture, and literature.

Second preference to an intermediate German major; overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0; demonstrated interest in the German language, culture, and literature.

5-THE GRACIELLA BLANCO SCHOLARSHIP (SPANISH)
This award is given to the Spanish major with the highest G.P.A. in Spanish in courses taken at USA, preferably a Senior or a Junior.

If no Junior or Senior Spanish major qualifies, then the scholarship is awarded to the Spanish minor with the highest G.P.A. in Spanish in courses taken at USA.

In the event of a tie the following considerations are weighed when making the decision:
dedication to Spanish and participation in Spanish-related activities on campus.
plans for the future: i.e., how the student plans to use his or her knowledge of Spanish.

6-THE FRENCH SCHOLARSHIP
First preference to an upper-level French major; overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0; demonstrated interest in the French language, culture, and literature.

Second preference to a French minor, overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0.

OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS

7. PASSAU EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1986, this scholarship is awarded to an upper-level German student to study on the USA-Universität Passau Exchange Program in Germany. The exchange is open to all full?time South Alabama students with a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or better, proficiency in German equivalent to two years of college study, and U.S. citizenship. Preference given to German major, though applicants from other fields are eligible.

8. AHEPA SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDY IN GREECE
Provided by the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, this scholarship is granted to outstanding students who wish to pursue their study of the Greek language in Greece.

9. FELICIA COOLEY AWARD
Provided by Spanish alumna Felicia Cooley, this scholarship is granted to a high-achieving Spanish major who is completing his/her intermediate level of study. The scholarship is to be used solely toward study abroad.
