USA
Foundation Professorship
Mathematics and Statistics - 1998/99
While any activity that contributes to the scholarly atmosphere and
development of the Department contributes to the teaching mission, the
highest priority for the use of the USA Foundation Professorships for
Mathematics and Statistics should be those projects that
- directly contribute to the education of the students, more than our
graduate students, or majors whenever possible, or
- directly contribute to the enhancement of our teaching methodology or
the knowledge of our disciplines.
Funding for 1998/99 will be distributed as follows.
- 1998/99 USA Foundation Lecture Series in
Mathematics and Statistics - $15,000.
- Project 98-A
- Administrator: Colloquium Committee
- The Departmental Colloquium Committee will be charged with all
management of the Lecture Series. There should be during the year at least:
two speakers on the teaching of mathematics or statistics; one mathematical
artist; three speakers on knot theory and related areas.
It is emphasized that this series is intended to support the teaching
mission of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the choice of
speakers should be made with this purpose in mind. The
Committee is charged to actively seek scholars that can attract a
wide University audience of both students and faculty, and speakers that
can address innovative, controversial or timely, approaches to teaching
mathematics and statistics.
- 1998/99 USA Foundation Travel Fund -
$3,000
- Project 98-B
- Administrator: Department Chairman
- This fund shall be used to support travel for faculty to attend
workshops, conferences, meetings intended to improve teaching. Requests
for support will be submitted to and approved by the Chair. First priority
will be given to those requests that would not necessarily be fundable
from other sources, such as the President's Foundation Travel Fund.
- G3 - Geometric Groups on the Gulf Coast - $1,000
- Project 98-C
- Administrator: Stephen Brick
- Additional support may be requested, if the need arises.
- Contingency Fund
- Project 98-D
- Administrator: Department Chairman
- Any funds remaining will be held as a contingency to take
advantage of opportunities that might arise during the year. These
may be specifically requested from the Chair at anytime.
Please note that funds may not be available at all until early October,
1998.
