Course Webpage: www.math.ou.edu/~jbarnard/S07-3333/ Textbook: Elementary Linear Algebra (8th ed.), by Kolman & Hill (Prentice Hall 2004). Announcements and Handouts: The main course page has an announcement section and a handout section. Both of these should be checked regularly, and you are responsible for any information found there. Schedule of Topics: On the main course page, there will be links to four Schedule of Topics pages, broken up by test dates. Each of these pages is a list, arranged by class date, of important terms, theorems, textbook examples, and textbook exercises that pertain to what is covered in class that day. This is meant to be a guide for your study outside of class.
Grading: Grades will be determined according to the following: Quizzes -- 10% Three Tests -- 45% Final Exam -- 25% Worksheets: There will be eleven take-home worksheets. These will be handed out each Thursday on which there is not a test, and due the following Tuesday. These are to be treated as homework assignments. You are free to use the textbook and your notes, and you are encouraged to work together, although your solutions should be turned in individually hand-written. Quizzes: There will be several in-class quizzes. These will usually be examples for you to work through, possibly in groups, on material just covered. Tests: There will be three in-class tests, Thursday, February 15, Thursday, March 15, and Thursday, April 19. Final Exam: The final exam is cumulative. It is scheduled for Friday, May 11, 1:30-3:30 in the usual classroom. Attendance: Routine attendance in class is essential and expected. As in any course, you should try to read the relevant sections of the textbook before attending lectures. The schedule of topics page lists relevant sections and examples to go over. Important Dates: Through Friday, January 29, you may drop the class with a 100% refund and no record of any grade. Through Friday, February 23, you may drop the class and receive an automatic grade of W. Through Friday, March 30, you may drop the class and receive a W only if you have a passing grade at the time of withdrawal. Through Friday, May 4, you may drop the class only with permission from the dean, and then receive a W only if you have a passing grade at the time of withdrawal. Avoidance of a low grade is not sufficient reason to obtain permission to withdraw after February 23. Calculators: Calculators will be neither allowed nor necessary for the tests, quizzes, or homework. Office Hours: If you have any questions or problems, you are encouraged to come by my office during office hours, or make an appointment to come by some other time. Email is the best way to contact me. If you plan on coming during office hours, you need not notify me ahead of time. Office hours are public hours, so you should expect that there may be other students there also. Student Disabilities: The University of Oklahoma is committed to providing reasonable accommodation for all students with disabilities. Students with disabilities who require accommodations in this course are requested to speak with me as early in the semester as possible. Students with disabilities must be registered with the Office of Disability Services prior to receiving accommodations in this course. The Office of Disability Services is located in Goddard Health Center, Suite 166, phone 405/325-3852 or TDD only 405/325-4173. Academic Misconduct: Procedures for dealing with cases of academic misconduct have changed as of Fall 2004. Students are assumed to be familiar with the current Academic Misconduct Code, details of which may be found at www.ou.edu/provost/integrity. |
