Super-exponential distortion in negatively curved groups

Abstract
We construct 2-dimensional CAT(-1) groups that contain free subgroups with arbitrary iterated exponential distortion, and with distortion higher than any iterated exponential. The construction uses the combinatorial and geometric techniques from Wise's version of the Rips construction to ensure that the groups we obtain are negatively curved.
