Prerequisite:   MA 126.

Text:   Linear Algebra: A Pure and Applied First Course   by E. Goodaire.

Objectives.   The goal of this course is to familiarize the students with the
fundamental concepts of linear algebra. The course will also strengthen
reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Coverage.   We will cover most of Chapters 1-5 and parts of Chapters 6 and 8
of the text. The topics include the geometry of the plane and 3-space, matrices,
linear equations, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, vector spaces,
and linear transformations.

Calculator.   A TI-89 or equivalent graphics calculator is required.

Exams.   There will be two in-class exams and a two-hour cumulative final exam.

Homework.   A homework assignment will be given at the end of every class.
These assignments will not be collected, but similar problems will appear on
quizzes and exams.

Quizzes.   There will be a quiz each Wednesday, except for the exam weeks.
There will be no make-up quizzes, but the two lowest scores will be dropped.

Final grade computation.   Final scores will be calculated as follows:

Letter grades will be determined according to the standard scale:
A: at least 90%;  B: at least 80%;  C: at least 70%;  D: at least 60%;  F: below 60%.
