Chartered in December 1916, the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company launched the heaviest dry dock on the coast between New Orleans and Newport News and prepared to build and repair merchant and naval vessels as America inched toward war. Although the shipbuilding industry in Mobile collapsed with the end of World War I, ADDSCO continued profitable ship-repair operations. The shipyard launched a new 16,000-ton dry dock to accommodate demand during World War II. By 1943 as many as 40,000 men and women worked there. The photographs in this gallery illustrate the dramatic change to the local shipbuilding industry in Mobile.
