Dr. Roy Buchsbaum

Senior Staff Radiation Oncologist

Dr. Roy Buchsbaum is a senior staff radiation oncologist at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. He attended Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in physics in 1968. After working for a year as a radiation physicist at Presbyterian University Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh, he went on to pursue a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine.

Over the next several years, Dr. Buchsbaum broadened his knowledge and treatment of cancer by pursuing fellowships in both hematology and medical oncology at the University of Colorado in Denver and medical oncology at the University of California, Irvine. Throughout his career he has held several teaching appointments, including an associate professorship in radiation oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Buchsbaum is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and radiation oncology.

In 2000, Dr. Buchsbaum relocated to the Mobile area as an attending radiation oncologist at the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center. In 2005, he became a part of the interdisciplinary team at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. The opening of the MCI gave him “a unique opportunity to work with the most advanced, modern technology available in radiation oncology.”

“Here I work directly with the medical and surgical oncologists on site to develop the optimal treatment plan for each individual patient.” This sort of collaboration coupled with Dr. Buchsbaum’s enjoyment of sailing, fishing and hiking has him connected not only to the MCI but to the region as well. “Cyberknife, which is stereotactic radiosurgery, and Tomotherapy, which is image-modulated radiation therapy, bring cancer care to a new level for Mobile and the region.”
