Dr. Windy Dean-Colomb

Staff Medical Oncologist
Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Clinical Oncology

Dr. Dean-Colomb is a staff medical oncologist and assistant professor in interdisciplinary clinical oncology at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. A native of Baton Rouge, LA, Dr. Dean-Colomb obtained her medical degree and fulfilled her residency at the University of Illinois as part of a combined MD/PhD program. In 2005 she moved back to Louisiana to work with FEMA in the disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. She resumed her medical oncology training in 2007 at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas where she completed her fellowship in oncology and also distinguished herself in the area of breast cancer research.

When asked what inspired her to become a physician and in particular a medical oncologist, Dr. Dean-Colomb responded, “I really can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a doctor. Growing up without health insurance allowed me to experience first-hand how difficult it is for the underserved in our society to receive even basic health care. I knew I needed to do something with my life that would help those suffering the most.” The desire to pursue oncology, however, was cemented by a particular life experience. Right before starting medical school, her 24-year-old brother was diagnosed with colon cancer. When asked about his prognosis the doctor responded, “don’t start reading a long book.” He died eight months later. This devastating event inspired Dr. Dean-Colomb with a passion not only to become a medical oncologist, but a physician-scientist in oncology. “Physicians have an important role in generating new knowledge. We should take that role seriously while providing excellent patient care in a compassionate and empathetic manner.”

Dr. Dean-Colomb is the author of several articles on the treatment of patients with breast cancer. She received a Merit Award in 2009 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting for her research and has received external funding for her research in both breast cancer and bone metastases. When asked about her practice and why she chose the Mitchell Cancer Institute, Dr. Dean-Colomb replied,“because I really have a chance to make a difference in the lives of the people in this community. A diagnosis of cancer is a devastating thing to happen to a person. I think one of the greatest treatments we can offer our patients is the knowledge that they won’t have to go through this alone.” Dr. Dean-Colomb will be working with other MCI physicians to provide an interdisciplinary “team” approach to breast cancer treatment.
