Dr. Michael A. Finan joined the Mitchell Cancer Institute in 2007 after serving as the residency program director for the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and chairman of the Cancer Committee at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.

A Louisiana native, Dr. Finan earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of New Orleans and his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship at the University of South Florida H.Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, where he was the recipient of numerous awards including the American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellowship Award for Clinical Research.

While in New Orleans, Dr. Finan was named among the “Top Doctors for Women” by the Ladies Home Journal in April 2002 and “Best Doctors in New Orleans” by New Orleans Magazine. He also served as the director of the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge Project, which offered free housing to cancer patients undergoing treatment in New Orleans.

When asked about his decision to move to the Mitchell Cancer Institute, Dr. Finan said, “The opportunity to develop a center of excellence in gynecologic oncology that included research and multidisciplinary care to serve women along the entire Gulf South was too exciting to pass up.”

Dr. Finan continues to propel his desire for Mobile to “provide the absolute best cancer care in the region” by becoming the first gynecologist in Mobile to perform robotic surgery with the DaVinci Robotic Surgery System. “Everyday we are working on new and better treatments to improve womens’ chances for a cure right here in Mobile Alabama. This includes new screening tests for gynecologic cancers as well. The MCI offers the opportunity to provide basic research and then see that research applied in the clinic.”

Currently, Dr. Finan is the chief of gynecologic oncology at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute and a professor of interdisciplinary clinical oncology. He specializes in a variety of cancers affecting women including cervical, vaginal, endometrial, vulvar, fallopian tube, and ovarian cancer, as well as gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.
