Dr. Roger Ove
Roger Ove M.D., Ph.D. is the Vice Chair of the Department of Radiation
Oncology and Philip Rubin Professor of Interdisciplinary Oncology at the
Mitchell Cancer Institute. He has an active clinical practice, but also has a
keen interest in the design and conduct of translational clinical research
incorporating technology to improve delivery of radiation in the treatment
of cancer. Dr. Ove graduated in 1980 from the University of Pittsburgh with
a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and mathematics. He went on to
pursue his PhD in physics at Yale University and upon graduation worked as
an Associate Research Scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing
Applications at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. While
there, he also taught as a visiting assistant professor in the Department of
Astronomy and in 1991 made the decision to pursue a degree in medicine.
Graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
College of Medicine in 1995, Dr. Ove fulfilled his internship in
internal medicine at the Yale University-affiliated Hospital of
Saint Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut. Integrating his earlier
academic interests with his medical training, Dr. Ove completed
his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Maryland
in Baltimore where he served as Chief Resident in 1999. In 2000
Dr. Ove was recruited to the South and joined the Department of
Radiation Oncology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham
where he served as an Assistant Professor for the next five
years. Since that time, Dr. Ove has held faculty positions at
the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, the East
Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, and has been
a member of the University of North Carolina Lineberger
Comprehensive Cancer Center before joining the MCI in
2010.
Dr. Ove has a special interest in the treatment of head and
neck, genitourinary, and central nervous system malignancies.
Focusing on the molecular aspects of cancer therapy, he
has a specific interest in interactions between radiation and
systemic treatments. Board certified by the American Board
of Radiology, he is trained in a number of special procedures,
including Tomotherapy, Cyberknife stereotactic intracranial
and extracranial radiosurgery, image-guided radiotherapy,
intensity-modulated radiotherapy, and brachytherapy for
prostate as well as breast cancer.
He has authored numerous scholarly articles and has served
as a Head and Neck Cancer Professor for the American
Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO).
As principal investigator on numerous grants, both private
and public, Dr. Ove has had a prolific publishing history and
continues to actively contribute to his specialized field. During
his spare time he enjoys golfing, water sports and fishing, and
spending time with his family.
