Palliative and supportive care is an important component of cancer treatment at the Mitchell Cancer Institute and integral to comprehensive cancer care. Palliative and supportive care encompasses the whole self, caring for the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of cancer patients and their families. Because cancer patients encounter multiple distressing symptoms such as pain, fatigue, nausea, and anorexia that highly affect their quality of life, increasing their comfort through prevention and treatment of suffering is crucial to enhancing their well-being. Palliative care aims to strengthen the quality of life of patients and their families who are faced with a life-threatening illness.
The Mitchell Cancer Institute provides palliative and supportive care for patients and their families across the cancer disease spectrum—from diagnosis, through survivorship, to end of life.
Patients with cancer have significant needs for palliative and supportive care, including pain and symptom management and psychosocial and spiritual support. The Mitchell Cancer Institute is pleased to provide this component of comprehensive cancer care through its fellowship trained physician in palliative and supportive care and staff.
