Dr. Eddie Reed

Clinical Director and Point Clear Charities Chair,
Abraham Mitchell Distinguished Investigator,
Professor of Oncologic Sciences

Dr. Eddie Reed serves as the clinical director for the Mitchell Cancer Institute. He was “attracted to the Mitchell Cancer Institute by the tremendous growth potential” both for the MCI and for the city of Mobile.

“Cancer care is at its best when you can deliver to cancer patients the very latest in treatment options,” Dr. Reed said. “When you can combine state-of–the-art cancer care and state-of-the-art research, that’s the best situation for patients.”

A southerner by birth, Dr. Reed has returned to the region after spending the last 25 years building a national and international reputation in both cancer research and clinical practice.

Dr. Reed earned his medical degree from Yale University, then completed his internship and residency at Stanford University, followed by a medical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md. He achieved tenure at the NCI in 1987 with his appointment as senior investigator. As chief of the NCI’s Medical Ovarian Cancer Section and chief of the Clinical Pharmacology Branch of the Division of Cancer Treatment, Dr. Reed gained international recognition for his pioneering studies on the molecular pharmacology of DNA-damaging anticancer agents and the clinical development of Taxol for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

In 2001 Dr. Reed was appointed director of the Mary Babb Randolf Cancer Center at the University of West Virginia. There he held a tenured, endowed chair and professorship, with joint appointments in medicine, cell biology, and pharmaceutical sciences. Four years later, he was recruited to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, where he served until 2008 as director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control.

Dr. Reed has been the author or coauthor of more than 275 peer-reviewed research and clinical publications, and is named inventor on eight patents. He is currently the Clinical Director, Abraham Mitchell Distinguished Investigator, and Professor of Oncologic Sciences at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, where he not only directs the clinical programs but is able to continue his research as well. Dr. Reed is particularly interested in future developments in the treatment of ovarian cancer and metastatic prostate cancer.
