Abraham Mitchell Clinical Cancer Research Scholar,
Staff Physician, Gynecologic Oncology Service,
Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Clinical Oncology

Dr. Rodney P. Rocconi, a gynecologic oncologist, specializes in the management of cancers of the ovary, uterus, cervix and lower genital tract. He also performs complex pelvic and minimally invasive surgery. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and received his medical training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he completed medical school, residency and fellowship. Throughout his time at UAB, he developed a passion for teaching and has been recognized with numerous teaching awards given to both medical students and residents. Additionally, Dr. Rocconi has a strong interest and foundation in both clinical and basic scientific research of gynecologic malignancies. Throughout his training and career, he has been the recipient of many research honors, most notably the Gynecologic Oncology Group Young Investigator Award.

In 2007, Dr. Rocconi joined the Mitchell Cancer Institute as a physician-scientist in the Gynecologic Oncology Service where he runs a busy clinical schedule. He was awarded the Abraham A. Mitchell Clinical Cancer Research Scholar, recognizing a $1 million dollar gift from local philanthropist Abraham Mitchell. This award allows Dr. Rocconi the ability to have a gynecologic cancer-focused lab to perform basic science research. His research endeavors focus on the development of improved screening methods for ovarian cancer and identification of novel strategies for the treatment of gynecologic malignancies. Dr. Rocconi has introduced research at more than 60 national presentations and has been credited with more than 50 publications in scientific journals over the past five years alone.

On a national scene, Dr. Rocconi was honored to be selected to serve on the 14 member council of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO), a council comprised of members from the nation’s largest and most elite cancer centers. SGO is an international professional society representing more than 1,200 physician specialists dedicated to the care of gynecologic cancers. The organization seeks to improve the care of women with gynecologic cancers by fostering research and disseminating knowledge to raise the standards of practice in the prevention and treatment of gynecologic malignancies.

A native of New Orleans, Dr. Rocconi blends well into the coastal complexion of Mobile and like most Mobilians is an avid sports enthusiast. In 2008 he chartered the first annual GO Run “to raise awareness of gynecologic cancers and to draw attention to an area where research is needed.” Drawing more than 600 spectators and supported by more than 500 racers, Dr. Rocconi was pleased to know that the city of Mobile was also behind his commitment.

“I’m excited and proud to be a part of this community and this cancer-fighting team. We are focused on upholding the mission of the MCI in being a research-driven, state-of-the-art cancer center in the Gulf Coast for the people of the Gulf Coast.”
