Dr. Suzanne M. Russo
Suzanne Russo M.D. is a radiation oncologist and Philip Rubin Professor of
Interdisciplinary Oncology with the Mitchell Cancer Institute. A Magna Cum
Laude graduate of Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Dr. Russo pursued graduate studies in
zoology at San Diego State University. She also worked as a research scientist
at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and Burroughs
Wellcome Inc. in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina prior to receiving her
medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in
Chapel Hill. Her internship in internal medicine, as well as her residency in
radiation oncology were also fulfilled at UNC, where she was Chief of
Radiation Oncology in her final two years.
In 2000, she joined the Wake Forest University School of Medicine
as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
In that same year she was awarded the ASTRO (American Society
of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology) Clinical Sciences Basic
Research Award as well as the RSNA (Radiologic Society of North
America) Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award. Just two
years later she was recruited to join the faculty at the University
of Alabama, Birmingham as an Assistant professor in the
Department of Radiation Oncology and an Associate Scientist in
the Experimental Therapeutics Program. While in Birmingham,
she was awarded multiple grants and was the lead investigator
on several initiated clinical protocols. Dr. Russo has held
faculty positions at the University of Tennessee College of
Medicine, the East Carolina University, Brody School of
Medicine, and has been a member of the University of North
Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center before
joining the MCI in 2010. During this time, she has continued
to produce numerous publications in the field of Radiation
Oncology.
Dr. Russo’s primary focus is the multimodality treatment of
sarcomas, gastrointestinal, and thoracic malignancies. She
has a special interest in the design and conduct of translational
clinical research, incorporating laboratory correlative studies
to gain insight into the molecular aspects of tumor biology
and mechanisms of targeted therapies. She is interested in
the interactions between radiation and systemic treatments,
and the use of new technologies and functional imaging to
improve the delivery of radiation.
Dr. Russo is a busy mother and physician who, not surprisingly
has developed a special interest in pediatric malignancies as
well as survivorship. She is an active member of the Children’s
Oncology Group and is excited to bring her expertise to cancer
patients along the Gulf Coast.
