Advanced Course Curriculum in the Department of Microbiology
& Immunology:
Graduate studies in the College of Medicine
are conducted under the auspices of the Graduate School
of the University of South Alabama. The course of study
leading to the Ph.D. in Basic Medical Sciences with
emphasis in Microbiology and Immunology is a four to
five year program. All students entering the program
must complete a core curriculum of graduate courses,
as described on the Interdisciplinary Basic Medical
Sciences Home Page. Students conduct three laboratory
rotations and choose a mentor by the end of their first
year. The student, the mentor and the Ph.D. Committee
choose advanced research and course work Research makes
up the majority of the second year through the end of
the graduate studies.
Development of students' teaching skills is achieved
through participation in the Medical Microbiology Laboratory
course for the medical students, through presentations
of journal articles in the departmental Journal Club,
and through yearly presentation of their research in
the departmental M&I Research Forum.
A seven year program is available that leads to the
M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Admission to the M.D./Ph.D.
program requires acceptance by both the College of Medicine
Admissions Committee and the Graduate Program Admissions

must be met for students who are seeking the Ph.D. degree:
