USA International Education Scholarship Programs
For University of South Alabama Degree Seeking Students

Please read all the information below carefully
BEFORE selecting and completing the application forms.

General Information

For many students, a study abroad experience is only possible with added financial support from one or more sources. Each year many programs including those administered directly by USA make scholarships and grants opportunities available to students who plan to study overseas.

In the following information you will find details that you will need to determine if you are eligible and on how you can apply for scholarships offered by the USA Office of International Education. READ the eligibility criteria, deadline information and the application procedures for each scholarship carefully.

Competition for these scholarships can be intense and the quality of your application will be very important. The scholarship application procedure is entirely independent from the program application procedures, although if you are awarded a scholarship you will need to have completed a program application and show that you have been admitted to said program.

Students should discuss all financial aid planning with their USA financial aid and study abroad advisor. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that their scholarship application is complete. You will NOT be notified if your application is incomplete.

How do I apply?

A complete scholarship application contains the following items and must be submitted together:

  • Complete scholarship application form

  • Financial Plan – program budget and costs and copy of applicable financial support information (if on financial aid copy of financial aid certification) demonstrating how scholarship will be applied.

  • Copy of current unofficial USA transcript.

  • Copy of program descriptive information (printout from web, official brochure, etc.).  You must either intend on or be in the process of applying for participation in the program you have chose.  If awarded you will be required to show proof of acceptance to your program of choice prior to the disbursal of the award.

  • Responses to the questions on the application form.  Make sure your answers are as complete as possible, using this form and the space provided (limited to 2100 characters or approximately 300 words in length). Responses are to be typed, grammatically correct, thorough and well organized. Your application will be evaluated based on content and effort put forth in answering the questions.

  • Hand written applications will not be considered.

  • Applicants should also review the eligibility requirements for each award as there may be additional factors specific to the award to include in your application

For the application form see the programs listed below

Scholarship Application Deadlines
See program information below. Deadlines are typically term specific occurring in October for Spring semester programs, April for Summer programs and May for Fall term programs. Other deadlines may apply earlier or later each term.

Scholarship application documents and completed program applications and materials must arrive by the announced deadline dates. Scholarship application deadlines are independent of program application deadlines and will not be extended even if the program application deadline is different.

Scholarship Recipient Commitment
Upon returning from abroad, all recipients must submit a one-page typed essay with photos describing how the program allowed them to interact with the host culture, how the program enhanced their language skills or understanding of cultural and social issues, and how the program activities related to their future academic and/or career goals. Students are encouraged to be creative in their presentation of this report. Please note that this mandatory essay and all other materials submitted for this report become the property of USA and may be used in print and/or electronic publications.

Selection Process
All applications are reviewed based upon the information provided in the scholarship application including the personal information, academic information, transcripts, proposed program and essays provided by the applicant. Financial need, study of non traditional languages, disciplines and in non traditional locations such as (non-western European locations) and academic excellence are strongly considered.

Notification of Award Status
Students selected for awards will be notified of their status by USA e-mail approximately two weeks after the application deadline. All award notices and commitments will require students to sign a letter of commitment and present any follow-up documentation including letters of admission to their program of choice.
