Since the human eye can see over 10 million colors, and most current monitors can display 24 bit color, why wouldn't you just make all your images for the web true color (24 bit)? That way, if the viewer's monitor could display true color, she would see true color images. Well, as you may have guessed or already know, there is that problem of download times.  And there is also another problem with respect to the web and color.  Let's deal with the latter problem first.
