Unit
4 Image Enhancement: 1 of 14
This
starts the fun part. From here on you will have a lot of hands-on
practice learning how to make old photographs look almost like new. And
you can use the same procedures to correct or enhance new images too.
Probably the most important indicator of image quality, particularly
in photographs, is dynamic range.
Key Point: Dynamic range is the range of tonal difference between the lightest light and darkest
dark of an image.
The higher the dynamic range in an image, the more
tones or colors and thus the more detail you can see. In a typical image, the widest dynamic range would be present if the lightest
tones are "white" and the darkest are "black."
Remember in our discussion of color, we learned that there are no colors
lighter than white (255,255,255) or darker than black (0, 0 ,0).
