Unit 4 Enhancement

Exercise 2

 Name_________________  ID___________Date____________

  1. Print out this page(s), then minimize the tutorial and open Photoshop 5.5.

  2. Using Windows Explorer, find the Image Tutorial folder and locate Picture1.

  3. Use the View:Details sequence to be sure you can see all the information about the files in the Image Tutorial Folder. How large in KB is Picture1?______________. What type of file is it?_____________

  4. Open Picture1 in Photoshop and compare the file size. Use the (Image:Image Size menu sequence)  ____________.

  5. Note but do not change anything on the Image Size dialog box. Close this dialog box by clicking on Cancel to insure no changes were made.

Key Point: Always make corrections on a copy of original image before using any compression or resizing (resampling).

  1. Use File:Save as A Copy to create a backup copy of the original.

  2. How would you describe the dynamic range of this image, limited or wide?_____________________________________________

  3. Use the Image:Adjust:Layers menu sequence to open the Layers dialog box.

  4. Does the histogram look like the one in the example?________ Cycle through all four channels. Do all the histograms look similar to one another?_________

  5. From the histograms, what can you say about the distribution of light and dark pixels in the image?
    ____________________________________________

  6. Do the histograms reflect your first impression of the image?______

  7. Do you need to adjust the black triangle for any of the channels? ____Would you agree that we have plenty of black pixels already?______________

  8. On the R channel, we do have a spike of pixels that are white, but we do not have nearly enough very light pixels as indicated by the wide gap of few if any pixels before the gray triangle.  Move the white triangle left to the point that you see a sustained level of pixels, almost to the original location of the gray triangle.   Do the same on the G and B channels and hit OK.

  9. Does the image now have a greater dynamic range? ___________ Is it more appealing and easier to read?_____________________

  10. Open the Image:Size dialog box again and check the size of the file.  Has it changed due to our adjustments? _______________

Key Point: adjusting an image with the Layers dialog box does not remove any pixels - it just changes their value.

  1. Cancel out of the Image Size dialog box and Save the image as "Picture1a" in the tutorial folder to preserve the working copy.  You will work on it again.

  2. Close Photoshop and return to the tutorial. Turn in your worksheet to the instructor at the end of the tutorial.
