  1. Print out this page(s).
  2. Minimize the Tutorial and Start Photoshop 5.5.
  3. Locate Picture2 in the Tutorial folder on the desktop or CD.
  4. Open the image file and determine its file size and pixel dimensions: _______MB; ___________________pixels.
  5. Save as a copy of the original, e.g. Picture2a
  6. We want to prepare this image for the web to be viewed at a horizontal pixel dimension of 600 pixels, but first crop the image to reduce the amount of the parking lot that is visible and focus your eye on the fountain and pier. Use your judgment as to how much to crop. Hint: use the Rectangular Marquee tool to delineate the area you want to KEEP and then use the Image:Crop menu sequence. Save the cropped file as Picture 2b.
  7. What are the new pixel dimensions and file size? ___________pixels _______M or K.
  8. The image is probable still much too wide to fit into our 600 pixel target. Rescale the picture to a horizontal pixel dimension of 600. Hint: Image:ImageSize dialog box.

  10. Save the file as Picture 2c.
  11. Experiment on the copy of the cropped and scaled image with the Photoshop Filter:Sharpen:Sharpen menu sequence. If you think the sharpened image is better use it for the remainder of the exercise. Did you decide to use the Sharpened image ____________.
  12. Use the Image:Mode:Indexed color sequence to index the colors. What happened to the image?______________________________________
    You can use the Edit:Undo sequence to go back to your original colors if you prefer. 
  13. Compress the image using the File:Save for Web sequence.  You can experiment with several variations of GIF's and JPEGs and see which option gives you a pleasing result and file size. 
  14. Try JPEG maximum (80 quality) what is the file size and download time at 56K?___________mb or kb _______________seconds.
