Transferring VHS Directly to DVD

Objective: This will take you guide you in transferring VHS tapes directly to a DVD. This method does not allow for any video editing.

Prepare the Equipment:

The TV, VCR, and DVD recorder are to be found in the video lab. All cable connections are made and the system should be ready to go. If for any reason the cables are not connected or the DVD recorder has been disconnected from the system, refer to page 18 in the Sony Video Recordable DVD Drive manual for instructions on hooking the VCR to the recorder. The manual will be on the stand with the equipment. The TV is connected so you can monitor what is being recorded and when to stop the recording. The TV should be turned to channel 4.

Step 1: Insert the VHS tape into the VCR and rewind/advance to the point at which you want to start recording.

Step 2: Turn on the DVD recorder (switch is on the back of the unit). Make sure "SYNC" is displayed on the display window (refer to page 18 in the Sony Video Recordable DVD Drive manual).

Step 3: Press the eject button (top front of the unit) and insert a disk. The recordable side should be facing to the right. A new blank disk is formatted automatically. Wait until "Format" on the display window changes to "Ready".

Step 4: Press "REC" on the DVD unit.

Step 5: Start playback on the VCR by pressing "Play". If there is a portion of the tape you do not wish to record to the DVD, press "Pause" on the DVD unit to stop recording - the VCR will continue playing. Press "Pause" again to start recording again.

Step 6: When you have reached to end of the tape or the end of the segment you wish to record, press "Stop" on the DVD unit.

Step 7: Before the DVD will play, you must finalize the disc. To finalize the disc, press "Function/Enter" to display "Finalize" on the display window (refer to page 27 in the Sony Video Recordable DVD Drive manual). Press "Select" to select "Yes". Press the "Function/Enter" key. You will be asked to reconfirm this selection. Press "Select" and "Yes" to reconfirm and the disc will be finalized.

NOTE: When the disc is finalized, information is written to the disk. If the disk is completely full, you will get a "Finalization Error" message.

Step 8: Eject the disk.
