The WWW is a great research resource for students.  However, how do you know whether students are submitting original work, or cut and paste reports?  There are several programs available to detect online plagiarism, as well as suggestions to discourage student cheating:

5.  Distance Education News:  Colorado's Public Institutions Will Cooperate in Distance Education

The Colorado Commission on Higher Education approved a plan for its public colleges and universities to share and develop online courses jointly in an effort to keep the state's distance-education programs competitive with the rest of the country's. All 28 of the state's public institutions, including the flagship universities and the community colleges, will collaborate in developing a catalog of all of their online courses and creating reciprocity agreements. Students will be able to take courses from any of the institutions and accumulate the credit in the colleges in which they're enrolled. The courses will be transferable among all of the institutions.

Colorado's goal is to provide students with greater access to distance courses and create a cooperative atmosphere for the colleges and universities to develop an extensive distance-education program, said Fred Richardson, the commission's chief information officer. He said that with the growing popularity of distance education around the country, the commission saw a collaborative agreement as necessary to stay competitive in the field. "We're not trying to centralize distance education," Mr. Richardson said. "We're trying a collaborative effort. We're proposing a confederacy of all the different higher-education institutions."
