Plagiarism and Cheating Issues in Distance Education ________________________________________ The WWW is a great research resource for students. However, how do you know whether students are submitting original work, or cut and paste reports? There are several programs available to detect online plagiarism, as well as suggestions to discourage student cheating: sites for instructors about plagiarism: http://www.wiu.edu/users/mfbhl/wiu/plagiarism.htm http://www.plagiarized.com/index.shtml http://www.vanguard.edu/rharris/antiplag.htm anti-plagiarism programs: http://www.findsame.com/ - free http://www.wordchecksystems.com/ http://www.canexus.com/eve/index.shtml _________________________________________ 2. _____________________________________________ Galli's QuizFaber enables you to create multimedia quizzes as HTML documents. While you can create quizzes quickly and effortlessly, you can also give them a personalized, polished look. This program simplifies quiz-making in HTML without any prior knowledge of HTML or JavaScript. You can create and manage random, multiple-choice, true-or-false, fill-in-the-blank, or word-matching questions for timed, weighted tests. Custom attributes include background colors, fonts, Java applets, images, and sounds -- which can be associated with corresponding questions or answers. You can also choose to send quiz results via email. http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,001EG9,.html _____________________________________________
_____________________________________________ The mission of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology is to provide leadership in educational communications and technology by linking professionals holding a common interest in the use of educational technology and its application to the learning process. Online
submissions are now being accepted for the AECT 2001 International Conference in Atlanta,
GA. The conference will be held November 8th through the 10th, with pre-conference
activities beginning the 7th of November. http://www.aect.org/Events/Atlanta/default.htm _____________________________________________ The Colorado Commission on Higher Education approved a plan for its public colleges and universities to share and develop online courses jointly in an effort to keep the state's distance-education programs competitive with the rest of the country's. All 28 of the state's public institutions, including the flagship universities and the community colleges, will collaborate in developing a catalog of all of their online courses and creating reciprocity agreements. Students will be able to take courses from any of the institutions and accumulate the credit in the colleges in which they're enrolled. The courses will be transferable among all of the institutions. Colorado's goal is to provide students with greater access to distance courses and create a cooperative atmosphere for the colleges and universities to develop an extensive distance-education program, said Fred Richardson, the commission's chief information officer. He said that with the growing popularity of distance education around the country, the commission saw a collaborative agreement as necessary to stay competitive in the field. "We're not trying to centralize distance education," Mr. Richardson said. "We're trying a collaborative effort. We're proposing a confederacy of all the different higher-education institutions."
