Real Moving Pictures!

Yes, adding video to your online course is possible. You knew that, of course, but you may have thought the technology both expensive to buy, difficult to use, and something better left to specialists.

Well, the tools readily available today make it practical for almost everyone to create video that can enrich online courses.  The following links should help you decide if video is for you, show how to use and create videos, and provide sources for FREE stuff that makes video fun and easy.

Why should you use video in an online course, particularly, why use a “talking head” with a PowerPoint? Is there any increase in value to students over the option of using an audio-only narrated PowerPoint? This set of examples by Gary Whitt at the Institute of Distance and Distributed Learning (IDDL) at Virginia Tech may help you decide. http://www.iddl.vt.edu/fdi/2001/presenter.htm

This page at the University of Washington contains several pedagogical reasons for using multimedia in your lesions, whether online on in class. Good Stuff! http://catalyst.washington.edu/catalyst/method/presentations.html

This page on the University of Wisconsin ID website contains basic information about the use of both video and audio in online courses.  It contains a good needs assessment – why use video, costs and other considerations, etc.   http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/ltde/orfi/avs/Modules/instruct.htm . You might also watch an excellent online video that UW uses to market their UW Portal website to potential student users. http://www.doit.wisc.edu/myuw/media/MUM1Mbps.ram

Curious about how large video and audio files may be? This page at Clayton University illustrates quick ways to calculate file sizes for various pixel dimensions (screen size), color depth (16 bit v. True color 24 bit, etc.) and frame rate (flickering images v. TV quality v. “movie” quality). http://learningcenter.clayton.edu/fidl/video/guidelines.htm
