These goals are quality indicators that should afford a continual process of faculty development for those involved with online courses. The rapid changes taking place in online education can be expected to continue and accelerate. The technical skills that distance education faculty will need to acquire will change quickly as well.

Pedagogical Goals

Distinguish between process and outcome goals and objectives.

Prepare clearly written and measurable objectives.

Analyze learner characteristics

Determine the demographics of the target population.

Identify the background needs, resources, and goals of the learner.

Estimate the learner's control over the time, pace, and place of learning.

Assess potential aptitude, support, or process variables that may affect content and method of delivery.

Entry Skills

Prepare a course map that illustrates principle and subordinate goals.

Assessment

Determine methods of measuring learning outcomes on-line.

Appraise security issues affecting web-based courses.

Conduct online assessments (testing).

Conduct alternative and portfolio assessment

Instructional, Learning, and Motivational Strategies

Summarize the methods, pros and cons of various web-based delivery approaches.

Select effective instructional and learning strategies.

Incorporate motivational strategies.

Select appropriate media combination to achieve learning outcomes.

Prepare an instructional agenda.

Prepare a lesson plan.

Evaluation

Design and conduct formative evaluation of courseware.

Revise courseware based on data collected in formative evaluation.

Fair Use and Intellectual Property

Summarize the University's policy on intellectual property and copyright issues related to original courseware development.
