The following table lists the areas of an online course. Not every course will include each area, but most course platforms have these functions available.

Contents of an Online Course

Course Home This area of an online course provides general information about the course. It includes the following information:
Syllabus
This document includes the objectives of the course, due date, grade criteria and other information. This area may also include navigation throughout the course.
Staff Introduction
This area includes information on the faculty teaching the course. Information included in this area will include contact numbers and email addresses.
Calendar
This content is optional but it provides the student with an overall summary of due dates and test dates.
Unit / Week / Module This area allows the faculty to separate the course by units, weeks, or modules. This categorization also allows the student to separate the large amount of information in a course.
Introduction
This content area provides an overview of the lesson and recalls prior information.
Objective
The instructor will inform the student of what they will be able to do after the instruction.
Lecture
The content information of the lesson is presented here. It may include audio, graphics and other documents.
Threaded Discussion
The instructor will present questions which will allow students to respond on the topic and comment on the responses of others.
Announcements
This area is used to keep the students informed of changes and additions. This area is the instructor’s direct communication with the class.
Readings
This area is a list of readings associated with the topic.
Assignments
This area includes what the students will do in each lesson. 
Course Folders These folders represent content that can be used by the instructor and the students. 
Gradebook
This area allows the instructor to show the students the grades for different assignments.
E-mail
This feature allows the instructor to e-mail students individually and in groups. Students may also communicate with each other.
Chat
This tool may be used by the instructor to allow the students to communicate simultaneously. 
Search
This feature allows the students to search for topics in the course.
Document Sharing
This folder allows the instructor and students to share documents in one area. 
Journal
This folder allows the students to comment on their experiences and assignments in the course.
Webliography
This area allows students and the instructor to list different websites related to the course.
