TANDEM HANG GLIDING
Come join Campus Recreation and Outdoor Adventures as we take you tandem hang gliding Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24. Live the dream and learn to fly as we take you to Lookout Mountain in Georgia (near Chattanooga, TN); no experience necessary. You will fly your first flights in a controlled environment as you surf the slopes of small hills 5 – 10 feet off the ground. You will have five opportunities to fly from a small hill with a certified instructor guiding you step by step. Then, fly tandem with an instructor by your side. An ultra-light aircraft will tow you to an altitude of 2,000 feet above the beautiful Lookout Valley for 12 – 20 minutes of actual flight time.
Day 1 - We will leave from the Recreation Center at 4:00 a.m. and drive seven hours to Lookout Mountain. We will set up our camp and spend the rest of the day sightseeing Ruby Falls – America’s deepest commercial cave and which has a massive underground waterfall – and/or Rock City with massive ancient rock formations, gardens, and seven state panoramic views and/or ride the Incline Railway – trolley style cars that climb through the scenic beauty of Lookout Mountain at a breathtaking 72% grade.
Day 2 – Hang gliding all day. Leave around 6 p.m. and arrive in Mobile at midnight.
Cost: $250. Open to students, faculty, staff, alums, family and friends. You must weigh less than 230 lbs. Fee includes transportation, all hang gliding fees and campground fees. All camping gear will be provided. Day one sightseeing fees – the three trips listed above are all about $15 each – are not covered. However, you may hike Lookout Mountain and visit Civil War sites for free.
How to sign up: Eight are required for the trip to make; in order to determine interest, leave your name and cell phone number with Randy Hunter at Campus Recreation by no later than Tuesday, June 12. If there is sufficient interest, we will meet Thursday, June 14, at 8 p.m. at the Recreation Center to make full payments and discuss the trip. There will be no refunds after June 14 (the hang gliding school requires full payment in advance); however, your “ticket” will be good for two years and is transferable should you have to miss our scheduled trip.
