APPALACIAN TRAIL/NANTAHALA RIVER
Come join Campus Recreation and Outdoor Adventures for Whitewater Paddle on the Nantahala River and Camping/Hiking the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina on Saturday - Monday, July 28 – 30 (celebrate the end of summer school) in Bryson City, NC.
The Nantahala River is a Class I, II, and III whitewater river. Our full river trip will be 8 ½ miles and last 2 ½ hours. A second run for half price will be optional. The river is dam controlled, thus assuring us of a great ride. Olympic competitors will train on this river, though it is considered family friendly. You can run the river in a two person “funyak” (a raft like 2 person kayak) or a one person funyak. Google “Paddle Inn Rafting Company” for pictures and complete trip information.
We will also hike the Appalachian trail with spectacular vistas of the Smokies and camp 3,000 feet above sea level.
Day 1 – Meet at Recreation Center at 2 a.m; leave at 2:30 a.m. Drive 8 hours to an entrance to the Appalachian trail. Hike two miles to Wersar Bald fire tower for an unbelievable view of the Smokies. Set up camp and play for remainder of day.
Day 2 – Break camp at 8 a.m. Drive 8 miles to the Paddle Inn. Begin full river trip at 10 a.m. Lunch. Take 2nd river trip or sightsee/hike. Set up camp in evening (showers will be available). Go out for dinner or eat around campfire.
Day 3 – Break camp at 9 a.m. and return to Mobile around 7 p.m.
Cost: students: $65, family members $67; staff/faculty/alums: $70, family members $75, non-USA: $85. We will supply transportation, camp fees, and all camp/backpacking gear.
