A Look Back at Last Fall

Since this past Fall was my first semester at USA, I thought it would be useful and appropriate to look back at the things that PETAL was able to accomplish last semester. In addition to our five New Faculty Seminar sessions, which were very successful, we had good response to our PETAL Brown Bag Lunches and Faculty Roundtable Discussions. Faculty Focus: What’s Happening at USA?

Everywhere you turn, people are talking about blogs, podcasts and wikis, about social networking and how today’s college students have grown up with these technologies.

Some of our faculty are already taking steps to engage these students using Web 2.0.

One of these is Peter Wood, Assistant Professor of Music and 2007 Teaching Excellence Award winner.

Teaching and Learning in the Literature

A recent article in the Chronicle, “The Truth Is, You Gave a Lousy Talk” (12/21/07), addresses some of the pitfalls of slide-driven conference presentations and presents four categories on which the visual aids of presentation should be judged:

  • Communication—How esoteric is your use of language in the slides?
  • Clarity—How much effort do you put into ensuring that each slide is clear to your audience?
  • Focus—How often is your use of technology unnecessary or distracting?
  • Presentation—How confident are you in your work and how well do your slides match what you have to say?
