A Word from the Director

PowerPoint as a Teaching Tool

We have had a considerable amount of discussion around PETAL the last few weeks about PowerPoint, particularly in terms of the advantages of converting slideshows to PDF files for easier downloading and printing by students, and while there are certainly circumstances where this isn’t feasible for some faculty , it is generally the best option when students intend to print the slides.

Faculty Focus: Teaching in the STEM

PETAL recently hosted a Brown Bag Lunch featuring Dr. Bret Webb (Civil Engineering) talking about a teaching workshop he attended this summer on applying innovative teaching techniques to undergraduate engineering education.

Since the material he discussed would be of value to far more faculty than attended the event, I asked Dr. Webb to write a brief article on his experience. We also hope to repeat the event in the Spring so that more people can attend.

Teaching and Learning in the Literature

Maryellen Weimer, the editor of The Teaching Professor, made a recent post to her blog about the importance of sharing teaching ideas with colleagues.

She makes several fine points, but the most important one is that colleagues are the richest and most available source for new information about teaching.

Sometimes that information is shared in the form of workshops (like the ones we host here in PETAL), but it is more frequently shared in informal conversations in the hall or parking lot.

The main point, however, is that we should all make a point to do more sharing.
