History
Phi Mu was founded on March 4, 1852 as the Philomathean Society at Wesleyan College
in Macon, Georgia. It is the second only to Alpha Delta Pi in age, making it the second
oldest sorority in creation. Martha Hardaway Redding, Mary Myrick Daniel and Mary
Dupont Lines were the three founding sisters of the Philomathean Society. The bond that
they created then still lives today in the heart of every Phi Mu.

The Philomathean Society officially became Phi Mu fraternity on October 4, 1904. The
Wesleyan chapter became the Alpha chapter of the new Greek fraternity. By 1925, Phi Mu
had 44 collegiate chapters represented at the national convention. In 1939, Alpha Delta
Theta affiliated with Phi Mu, increasing Phi Mu's size. Today the Philomathean Society
has grown into Phi Mu Fraternity with over 137 chapters nationwide.
