Security
Policy and Procedures
Disclosure
of campus crime statistics: The Chief of University Police is
responsible for collecting and disseminating campus crime information
for the University of South Alabama with assistance from designated
staff members from other campus locations and other law enforcement
agencies. At the conclusion of each calendar year, crime statistics
are collected and prepared for dissemination through various mediums.
A digest version of the campus security policy and procedures and
statistics is published in the Class Schedule booklets, the student
handbook "LowDown", the campus newspaper "The Vanguard" and in special
pamphlets provided by the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs,
Dean of Students office, Office of Personnel, USA Public Relations
office, USA-Springhill Avenue Campus Administration office, USA
Medical Center, USA Women and Children's Hospital, USA Knollwood
Hospital, USA Housing Office, Office of Admissions and USA Fairhope
Campus. The entire campus security report may be found on the Internet
at URL address www.southalabama.edu/police.
Timely Notice
Procedure: In the event of a major crime incident occurring
on campus, the Chief of University Police and the Vice-President
for Student Affairs will evaluate the circumstances and determine
the need and manner for alerting the campus community. Methods for
providing timely notice may include telephone alert to resident
hall students, fliers posted in high traffic areas, reports included
in campus and local newspapers and television or other local news
media, by word of mouth from housing authorities or presented in
classes by faculty members.
Crime Log:
The University Police Department maintains a crime log containing
crime reports and incident complaints covering a period of the most
recent 60 days and is available during normal business hours, Monday
through Friday, except on holidays. The log is maintained at Police
Administration in Faculty Court South, room 20. Crime log entries
older than 60 days are available for review within 2 working days.
The University Police department submits crime report information
to the University's student newspaper, "The Vanguard," which then
is published weekly during the regular school semesters.
Confidential
Reporting Procedure: Students who become victims of sexual assault
are encouraged to report such crime occurrences to University Police
and to assist by cooperating with investigators and by preserving
crime evidence. In the event a student, who has become a sexual
assault victim, wishes not to report to police authorities, the
student may report to medical, counseling or other University personnel
as previously discussed herein. For campus crime statistics purposes,
a confidential report of a rape made to medical, clergy, counseling,
housing or administrative personnel will be reported in such a manner
that the identity of the victim is not revealed until such time
as the victim deems it appropriate. The confidential rape report
will be accomplished by completing the "Sexual Assault Incident
Form". The completed incident form will be forwarded to the
University Counseling office to the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator.
The coordinator is designated as the University's collection point
for report purposes and will assist with determining appropriate
timely notice requirements.
Access to
Facilities: Access to University facilities and programs are
restricted to University affiliates except for special programs.
Facilities and events open to the public are so advertised. Access
information and visitation rules for resident halls are published
in the housing rules and regulations provided to each resident.
Students are expected to comply with dorm access rules implemented
for their safety.
Campus Lighting
and vegetation control: The maintenance of campus facilities
provide for regular upkeep of grounds and buildings to promote safety
(i.e. replace or repair defective lighting, trimming trees and shrubbery,
removal of safety hazards, etc.). The University Police report unsafe
campus conditions related to grounds or facilities to the Maintenance
Department. All University community members are encouraged to report
unsafe campus conditions they observe to Maintenance or to the University
Police. Campus community members are encouraged to help campus safety
representatives identify areas that may be considered unsafe due
to lighting conditions or vegetation growth. Please help us by contacting,
Maintenance
- (251) 460-7111 for lighting concerns
Landscaping - (251) 460-6356 for vegetation control on main
campus
Housing Office - (251) 460-6185 for light or vegetation control
concerns at Resident Halls
Monitoring
for Off Campus Crime Incidents: Due to the multi campus nature
of the University, the University Police Department has information
support agreements with local law enforcement agencies. The City
of Mobile Police Department and the City of Fairhope Police Department
have been requested, in writing, to assist the University Police
with the reporting requirements of the "Clery Act" by providing
crime statistics for areas surrounding the campus boundaries. Each
of the law enforcement agencies has maintained an excellent professional
relationship and often seeks each other's assistance on incidents
of mutual interest.
Community
Responsibility: Campus community members include faculty, staff,
students and others who are invited as guests to visit our campus.
Community members are reminded to be responsible for their own safety
and security. The University encourages everyone to be safe, look
out for the well being of others and, in the event a crime does
occur, report it to officials.
