USA Graduate Students Receive Nelson Award
The department of marine sciences at the University of South Alabama and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab recently announced the winners of the Nelson Award from the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.
The 2005 recipients are doctoral student John Higgins III, of Agawam, Mass. and graduate student Lindsey Kramer, of Gates Mill, Ohio. The Nelson Award is given every year to a USA marine sciences doctoral student and graduate student whose research progress is outstanding. The award is $1,000 for doctoral students and $500 for graduate students.
Higgins’ research focuses on jellyfish reproductive behavior and Kramer’s research centers around the effectiveness of marine protected areas.
The Nelson Award is named in honor of Dr. Gareth Nelson, former Curator of Fishes at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Dr. Nelson’s research spans over twenty years and helped publicize the ADSFR to national prominence.
