The University of South Alabama’s Gold Key chapter of Mortar Board was awarded the Golden Torch Award and the Project Excellence Award for the 2005-2006 academic year at Mortar Board’s national conference in Columbus, Ohio.
The Gold Key chapter was one of 19 chapters nationwide to receive the Golden Torch award and the only chapter in the Southeast to win the honor. The Golden Torch is given to Mortar Board chapters that go beyond timeliness and excellence while exemplifying the ideals of excellence in scholarship, leadership and service.
The USA group was among 27 chapters nationwide to win the Project Excellence Award. They were honored for their Hurricane Katrina book drive benefiting area residents and libraries.
Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. USA’s Gold Key chapter was chartered in 1979.
