As the University of South Alabama’s first comprehensive fund-raising campaign begins its third and final year, it has raised $64.7 million toward its $75 million goal. Campaign USA has received 29,348 gifts from more than 17,000 donors, including faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters.
Campaign USA has a single-word slogan – Leadership – a tribute to USA’s role in the region in the past and its increasing importance in the future of the area, campaign leaders said.
The campaign is enriching all aspects of USA, from its academic colleges and schools to its hospitals, athletic programs, libraries and campuses. The money raised will be used to fund such items as undergraduate and graduate scholarships, professorships, classroom and laboratory equipment, and health care innovations. Funds will also be used for capital enhancements to USA’s track and soccer programs and a campus bell tower.
Supported by its Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni and community leaders, the University is using Campaign USA as a transformational time in the life of the institution, ensuring its future as a leader in education, research, service, health care and economic development.
“Campaign USA is paying great dividends for University faculty, staff and students,” said USA President Gordon Moulton. “We’re extremely pleased with the momentum, and I’m optimistic that we’ll meet our goal. We thank everyone who is helping to make this historic campaign a success.”
The goals for the final year include raising the remaining $10.5 million, with a focus on both broadening the base of support for the campaign and on major gifts for key campaign areas.
“As we enter the last year of the campaign, there are a few campaign goals on which we need to concentrate our major gift efforts,” said Dr. Joseph F. Busta Jr., vice president of development and alumni relations. “We also need to spend more time on broadening the base of donors for gifts of any amount for inclusion in the campaign.”
The Campaign USA Leadership team is comprised of local civic, business and national leaders, many of whom are alumni.
“Several of our campaign goals have been achieved and though some have not, they are within our reach,” said James A. Yance, a 1970 USA alumnus and retired Mobile attorney who is chairman of the Campaign USA Leadership Team. “The campaign’s Leadership Team is dedicated to achieving all of our goals, so there is still work to be done by us all.”
