USA Enrollment Sets Multiple Records

The University of South Alabama this fall has experienced another record enrollment, including the largest number of new students in its history.

A record 14,757 students enrolled at USA this semester, representing a 478-student increase from one year ago.

USA this fall set multiple new records, including a record:

  • 4,215 new students entering USA for the first time
    (these include new freshman and transfer students)
  • 11,408 undergraduates
  • 2,824 graduate students
  • 525 medical students, and
  • 2,543 African-Americans.

Additionally, USA reported a historic number of students living on campus, with more than 2,700 now residing at the University. 

“High quality and diverse academic programs remain the primary force behind USA's strong growth in recent years,” said USA President Gordon Moulton.  “This year, the addition of football and marching band created even greater interest in the University, which contributed further to our positive growth trend.”

USA drew new freshmen from more than 300 high schools nationwide, with Baker and Murphy each producing more than 100 members of the University's freshman class.

The Alabama Commission on Higher Education has not yet compiled enrollments for the state's universities this fall, but ACHE data indicates that USA has consistently been one of Alabama's fastest-growing universities in recent years. USA's enrollment has grown by more than 3,400 students in the last decade, representing an increase of nearly 30 percent.

In addition to numbers, USA grew in academic quality as well. The entering freshman class included 149 students with ACT scores of 28 and above, 102 with 29 and above, and 71 with 30 and above.

USA this past year awarded 2,580 degrees, bringing the historical number of degrees awarded by the University to more than 64,500.
