USA Professor Named Chair of Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling

University of South Alabama College of Education department of professional studies chair Dr. Charles Guest Jr. has been elected chair of the board of the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling.

Guest, a licensed professional counselor in Alabama, has a background in community mental health counseling. He began his career at USA in 1996 as an assistant professor of counselor education. In 2006, he was appointed chair of the department of professional studies. Gov. Bob Riley appointed Guest to a five-year term with the Alabama Board of Examiners in 2007. Guest is the first USA faculty member to serve on the board since its inception in 1979.

Guest will serve as chair for a one-year term with the potential for re-election to additional terms.

“I have enjoyed the three years I have served as a board member and I am honored by the confidence shown by the other members of the board in electing me chair,” Guest said. “I am excited about the opportunity to continue to serve the citizens of Alabama in my new role.”

The Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling is a regulatory agency appointed by the Governor and comprised of licensed professional counselors, counselor educators, and public members. Its mission is to protect the public from incompetent, unethical, and unlawful counseling practice; to enforce qualification standards for all levels licensure; and to delineate unlawful conduct through disciplinary procedures against practitioners who violate applicable laws or rules.
