|The University of South Alabama student newspaper, the Vanguard, received numerous awards from the Society of Professional Journalists during its regional convention in Miami.
Competing in the category for weekly student newspapers in Alabama, the Vanguard took home five total awards, the most out of any college or university in Alabama. The Vanguard earned four second-place awards and one first-place award.
The Vanguard also took second in the Best Overall category, coming in behind the University of Central Florida, which is the nation’s third largest university.
While serving as the Vanguard’s managing editor, Daniela Werner landed the newspaper’s only first-place award for general news. This recognition was for her article “Muslim Leader Denies Terrorist Ties.” Werner was recently named editor-in-chief of the student paper for the upcoming academic year.
Matthew Peterson, former editor-in-chief, placed second for column writing and also in-depth reporting. The Vanguard’s Web site, managed by Rodney Thompson, also placed second.
Peterson said he’s proud of what the Vanguard staff was able to accomplish during his tenure as top editor. He said the staff is talented, dedicated and willing to take extra steps to make the newspaper a success.
