Spring 2014 Commencement, Saturday, May 10th at 2:00 p.m., Mitchell Center

Participation in Commencement
All full-time faculty members are requested to be present in academic regalia at commencement.

Robing
Please arrive at the Mitchell Center, Room 1101 no later than 1:15 p.m. on the day
of commencement. Robing will take place in Room 1102. Light refreshments will be available.


Parking
Parking is located in the lot near the Gamma Residence Halls. You must have your faculty parking hangtag in order to park in this lot.

Ceremony
Faculty and administrative personnel will line up in double file in the Mitchell Center, Room 1101. Faculty Marshals, led by Dr. S. L. Varghese and Dr. Nancy Lambe, will oversee the line up process.

Precisely at 1:55 p.m., the Chief Marshal leads the faculty into the Arena, down the center aisle, and stops at the bottom of center stairs, stage right. The faculty will split into two rows – left and right – and proceed in front of the stage, and toward the back of the Arena. Registrar Office staff will be in place to direct the faculty up the SE and SW stairs to the Concourse level. Faculty marshals will assist with seating in the designated Faculty areas. Please remain standing for the student and platform party processional, Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem, and Invocation.

As degrees are being conferred, you will be asked to stand when your college is introduced.

Faculty recesses at the end of the ceremony at the same time as the platform party recesses on the floor.

Bookstore representatives will be available in rooms 1101 and 1102 for return of rented academic regalia.

Please note that valuables should not be brought to the Mitchell Center since the robing area is not secure.

Instructions

Faculty process down the Arena center aisle, split left and right, proceed to the stairwells behind the stage, ascend the stairs and enter into appropriate Concourse-level Portals for seating.

An instructional PowerPoint will be e-mailed to you prior to the commencement ceremony. Please read carefully and contact the Registrar’s Office (251-460-6251, Option 4) if you have any questions.

At the end of the ceremony, return your stoles to one of the lead marshals.

Chief Marshal Information

NOTE: Friday, May 9th, Registrar staff will be in the Arena from 8:30 - 11:00 a.m. if you wish to practice.

Ceremony

• Obtain mace at 1:30 p.m. from Mitchell Center, Room 1613.

• Meet faculty at northwest entrance of the Mitchell Center Arena about 1:45 p.m..

• Lead faculty into arena at precisely 1:55 p.m.

• Stand at bottom of Platform center steps (stage right) while the faculty split into separate rows and marches to the stairwells. Remain at the bottom of center steps until the platform party arrives.

• Follow platform party up center steps to stage. Go to Row 3 (at edge of stage) and place mace in stand, and be seated on Row 3.

• At the end of the ceremony, lead the platform party off the stage and down the center aisle exiting the arena out of the northwest portal.

• Return mace to Mitchell Center, Room 1613.

Ceremony
• Report to Mitchell Center, Room 1106 for distribution of gonfalons and line-up.

• Students will process to the Mitchell Center and arrive at the northeast door at approximately 2:00 p.m.

• As students process into the building, you merge into the lineup in front of the student carrying the sign for your college.

• NOTE: The University Gonfalonier will lead the procession of students to their seats.

• NOTE: The order of entering the arena: Dr. Turrens with University Gonfalon; Lead Student Marshals (Dr. Rivizzigno and Dr. Balczon); students with College Gonfaloniers leading them.

• NOTE: Gonfaloniers will receive an email the week before commencement detailing the order of the colleges on the arena floor.

• You will remain in place for the platform party processional, Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem, and Invocation.

• When Acting President Smith directs everyone to be seated, you will be seated behind the student section on the arena floor.

• In the recessional, you will follow the platform party out of the arena and exit to the right, out of the same door you entered. Note, the platform party will be exiting to the left.

• You do not recess with the gonfalons.

There will be a voluntary gonfalonier meeting on Friday, May 9th at 10:30 a.m. in the Mitchell Center arena if you wish to practice.
