The University of South Alabama has been ranked by Forbes magazine in its Top 15 Patent-Revenue-Generating Universities of the Nation. The September 2008 article, please click, Universities That Turn Research Into Revenue, noted the rankings were based on a 2006 survey of 189 schools made by the Association of University Technology Managers. USA's ranking was determined by a yield ratio between research expenditures of $20.6 million to royalty-related income of $1.2 million - a 5.9 percent yield. Forbes noted one of the University's top patents is the drug Oxigon, used to treat Alzheimer's disease. Forbes magazine also noted patent revenues are expected to increase at USA based on the research being conducted at the Mitchell Cancer Institute.
