Department of Developmental Studies

The Developmental Studies Department offers courses in mathematics; writing; college reading and study skills.  Small-class instruction; tutoring; experienced, caring faculty; and excellent academic advising provide additional support. Faculty, professional staff, and tutors are all committed to serving students. Developmental Studies courses are open to all University students.

Assessments show that Developmental Studies is making a difference. Students who take advantage of courses in Developmental Studies perform well in subsequent courses. Studies show that students who successfully complete writing in Developmental Studies have a higher pass rate and were less likely to withdraw from  EH101, English Composition I than University students in general. Also, students who have successfully completed mathematics in Developmental Studies have a higher pass rate and were less likely to withdraw from MA112, Precalculus Algebra.

The Learning Lab

The mission of The Learning Lab in The Department of Developmental Studies is to assist students in achieving academic excellence.  The Learning Lab provides students the opportunity to receive tutoring (one-on-one or group sessions), and obtain assistance in mathematics.  Additionally, the Learning Lab offers a functional and friendly learning environment and is an excellent place to study.

University Writing Center

The University Writing Center is an instructional facility, not an editing service. Our writing consultants focus on teaching the writers, rather than simply fixing the writing. Students and others may receive help on any type of writing task at any stage of the writing process: from idea generation, development, and revision, to grammar and editing strategies.

Writing Across the Curriculum Program

The Writing Across the Curriculum Program is designed to assist faculty in designing and implementing writing-intensive courses. The basic premises of the WAC program is that people learn through writing. Skills such as critical thinking and reading, writing within the conventions of a particular discipline, and developing rhetorical strategies are ideally unified in a writing intensive ("W") course.
