ARCHAEOLOGIST POSITION (Environmental Analyst III)
The Maryland State Highway Administration is seeking to fill a senior level archaeologist position in their Baltimore, Maryland office. The position will be a full time, state position with benefits.
Description: The archaeologist will be responsible for overseeing numerous transportation related projects which will require archaeological investigations. Specifically, the position ensures compliance with state and federal cultural resources laws and regulations by planning, supervising, and conducting archaeological surveys and/or managing the work of consultants. The archaeologist plans and directs the identification, evaluation, and treatment of archeological resources. This includes approving, managing, and implementing the following efforts: evaluations of project effects; developing means to minimize and mitigate adverse effects; and coordinating projects with review agencies. The position also coordinates with other state offices to provide technical assistance as described above; directs and implements preparation of schedules, budgets, and scopes; plans, implements, and directs technical investigations; prepares and directs preparation of correspondence, reports, and Treatment Plans; prepares Agreement Documents for the Administrator’s signature; and coordinates with state and federal review agencies to obtain approval for highway projects.
In addition to clearing transportation projects, the archaeologist will be encouraged to participate in the state highway administration's public outreach program which currently includes research of 18th and 19th century slave owning plantations, African American sites, and initiatives to celebrate the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Participation in professional conferences and publications are encouraged and supported. No overnight travel will be required.
Requirements: The applicant must possess a graduate degree in anthropology or other related field and have at least two years of experience in cultural resource management. Experience in cultural resource management, invoicing, composition of proposals, and budgeting at the project level is desired.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will range between $50,000 and $70,000 per year. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, equipment stipend, health insurance, retirement, and parking allowance. Employment will be with Maryland Environmental Services and will be a position that is renewed on an annual basis.

JFNew is seeking an Archaeological Field Director for its Walkerton, IN office. Responsibilities include conducting background research, directing archaeological fieldwork, laboratory analysis, writing reports and coordinating with other JFNew staff.
Qualifications include an M.A. in anthropology/archaeology or related field or sufficient experience to meet Indiana guidelines as a Field Director. Responsibilities include ensuring the quality of data, fieldwork, and paperwork. Applicants must have experience leading field crews in Midwest archaeological contexts. Familiarity with Section 106, NEPA, and other cultural resource regulations also required. Technical experience operating a GPS receiver and/or a Total Station and managing GIS data a plus.
Qualified applicants should exhibit good leadership qualities, strong technical skills, good communication skills, and feel comfortable making tactical decisions in the field.

Archaeologist/Field Director
TRC, which has one of the nation’s largest cultural resources practices, has an opening for an archaeologist in our Ellicott City, Maryland office.
We are seeking an archaeologist with an advanced degree and supervisory experience to work as a Field Director and/or Principal Investigator on survey, testing, and data recovery projects primarily in the Mid Atlantic region. Applicants must document successful completion of archaeological research in the region, including field, lab, analytical, and reporting experience. Candidate must be able to travel to execute field projects, manage field crews, and complete technical reports under minimal supervision. Salary range is competitive and based on experience. The advanced degree requirement may be waived if sufficient field supervisory experience is demonstrated.
