The goal of the NCLB Partnership is to prepare highly qualified teachers through extensive clinical field experiences and tutelage under the watchful eyes of master teachers and university faculty.

The cornerstone of the NCLB Partnership is collaboration. All of our clinical field experiences rely on collaboration with our K-12 colleagues. Without our public schools, we have no teacher education program. The NCLB Partnership enriches the concept of collaboration. USA interns are immersed in the K-12 classroom from the first day. Each intern is assigned a Mentor Teacher, a master teacher. Interns learn and assume the responsibilities of paraprofessionals, working alongside teachers to provide instruction for children.

teacher education majors This semester, seventeen teacher education majors work each day in schools eligible for Title I support. These partner schools have large numbers of children who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of these students are "low achieving" and require carefully designed instruction that only a master teacher can provide. Through the NCLB partnership, these children enjoy the benefits of a master teacher augmented by USA interns who are committed to learning their craft.

A typical workweek for USA interns is rigorous. After teaching all day in the schools, the interns complete their academic coursework in the afternoons at the University. While the interns must meet the same class requirements as our traditional teacher education students, their clinical experiences are much richer. Interns also earn a stipend for their work. Teachers who complete the NCLB Partnership program will be well prepared to begin their induction into the teaching profession. Contrary to national trends that predict half of the teachers in urban areas flee the profession, we anticipate that these USA interns will enjoy a lifelong career in teaching.
