Number
of Highly Qualified Paraprofessionals
| During
the Spring Semester semester, 2002, 17 NCLB Student Interns worked
as highly qualified paraprofessionals in four elementary schools
in the Mobile County Public School System. These USA teachers-in-training
are learning from their intensive clinical field experience and
they are provide a most positive effect on the lives of more than
340 children across Mobile County. By working in the schools approximately
30 hours a week, these student interns are providing the children
with more than 6,000 hours of instruction in reading, mathematics,
and other curriculuar areas. |

Technology - Working under the
guidance of exemplary Mentor teachers, the USA Student Interns help
to enrich the classroom in many ways. For example, each intern has
been given the use of a laptop computer to help them integrate technology
in the classroom. The interns have used these computers to teach
their students everything from learning to conduct research on the
Internet to creating a PowerPoint presentation about dinosaurs.
In addition, both the interns and the Mentor Teachers are provided
with on-site technology support daily as they explore new ways to
make learning more exciting through the use of technology. |
| Talents
Unlimited Training - One of the most exciting instructional
programs which Student Interns learn about as part of the NCLB Partnership
is Talents Unlimited. This teaching/learning program improves students'
critical and creative thinking skills within the context of classroom
curriculum. Talents Unlimited focuses on students' specific work-related
thought processes: Productive Thinking, Communication, Forecasting,
Planning, and Decision Making. The Talents Unlimited model provides
a practical structure for teachers to facilitate students' application
of these high-level processes to academic content.

| During
the Spring Semester, the USA student interns complete their Talents
Training and will use these new strategies during their upcoming
student teaching semester. Many thanks to Patti Hughes for her
leadership and hard work with the Student Interns. This new skill
certainly makes our USA Student Interns highly sought after new
employees! |
| Mobile
County Math Initiative - USA Student Interns are learning
one of the most successful mathematics education program in the
nation. The Mobile County Math Initiative grew out of the early
efforts of the Maysville Math Initiative (MMI). The partnership
which supported the Initiative as comprised of the Mobile Area Education
Foundation and the Mobile County Public School System, the Alabama
state Department of Education, SERVE, the South Alabama Research
and Inservice Center, BellSouth, the Disney Foundation and the University
of South Alabama. This standards-based reform mathematics program
relies heavily on intensive professional development for teachers.
Student Interns and teachers participating in MMI engage elementary
students in cross-curriculum studies which include social studies,
art, reading and language arts. |

Maryvale
Elementary School is both an NCLB partnership school and an early
pioneer in Mobile County Math Initiative. This school, which has
95 percent of its student on free or reduced lunch, scores higher
than the state average on the SAT-9. Working alongside Mentor Teachers,
USA Student Interns receive practical job-embedded teacher education
training, in classrooms which focus on student learning. |
